Sarah Dessen Writing

We had to do this author focus thingie for Lit. and I chose Sarah Dessen.

Introduction
On numerous occasions, I ask my friends, and even a few teachers, for recommendations on authors. Many, many, many times I have been suggested Sarah Dessen. Of course, I never really had a chance to read any of her books. I had heard that Sarah Dessen really speaks to the young adult audience. Now, after reading Keeping the Moon, I truly believe that.
Sarah Dessen helped me see life in a different light. Keeping the Moon is one of my favorite books now. What interests me the most about Sarah Dessen is that she seeps into the teenage mind, reminding you that she, too, was once our age.
Many types if readers would appreciate Sarah Dessen’s work. If you enjoy growing up stories, you particularly will love Sarah Dessen’s novels. Comedy is included in Sarah Dessen’s books, but it’s more like a taste of comedy with a lot of seriousness.
By reading Sarah Dessen’s novels, a reader experiences many things. They help you learn more about yourself, and life. Her books also teach you about friendship and how to love yourself for you. I, personally, have benefited very much by reading just one of Sarah Dessen’s novels.

Sarah Dessen was born in Illinois in the year 1970. But, she was raised in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She was really into reading and writing while growing up. Sarah always had an active imagination. “I have a tendency to embellish.” she admits on her website, SarahDessen.Com. “Once you learn how to make a story better, it's hard not to do it all the time.” she says. For college, Sarah attended the University of North Carolina. At UNC, she graduated with a degree in English and studied Creative Writing. After graduation, Sarah Dessen’s parents were wishing that Sarah would get a new, “real job.” But, despite their wishes, Sarah Dessen kept her waitressing job at The Flying Burrito and tried publishing a novel. Sarah’s time at The Flying Burrito inspired her to write a few of her books, including Keeping the Moon.
Most of Sarah Dessen’s novels were inspired by her group of friends from high school. Three years after Sarah graduated from college, she sold her first novel, That Summer. A year after that, she was offered a job in teaching and finished waitressing. Currently, Sarah Dessen has published eight young adult books. Although she writes a great young adult book, that wasn’t her intention. Her agent said that her second book had a very strong teenage voice. Now, Sarah realizes that writing young adult books fits her quite well.
Sarah Dessen presently lives with her daughter, Sasha, her husband, and her two dogs. Just recently, she published her latest young adult book, Lock and Key in the April of 2008.

Book List
· Keeping the Moon
Colie has been an outcast her entire life. It started because she was overweight. But even after she lost an entirety of forty-five and a half pounds, she was still on the outside. This summer, as her mother-Kiki Sparks, weight loss and self-esteem queen-goes on her European tour to promote her new products, Colie is sent to her out-of-the-ordinary Aunt Mira’s house in Colby, North Carolina. Instantly, and unexpectedly, Colie meets two waitresses who teach her about life and how to love and be loved.
· Just Listen
Once, Annabel Greene was the girl who had it all. She modeled for local print ads and commercials. Her wardrobe was beyond compare. Annabel and her best friend, Sophie, were always invited to any party out there. But at one particular party, on the last day of school, Sophie thinks she sees Annabel being “friendly” with her boyfriend. Just like that, Annabel went from the girl who had it all, to the girl with nothing. The next fall, Annabel begins the school year with nobody. Instead of exposing the truth, not wanting to hurt anyone, or herself, Annabel keeps quiet about what happened that last year. But soon, with the help from a fellow outsider, she begins to find herself. Also, she begins to scrape up the courage and hope to reveal what happened on the night that she has tried so hard to avoid.
· That Summer
Things in Haven’s life are simply changing too fast. She’s getting taller every day. Her father is getting remarried to a woman who is only five years older than Haven’s older sister, Ashley. Ashley is also preparing for her own wedding. All Haven wants is for her life to be normal again. That is, back to how everything was. Then, one of Ashley’s old boyfriends, Sumner shows up in Haven’s life. Haven had always admired Sumner, and held Ashley responsible for breaking his heart by dumping him. But soon, Haven learns the truth of the break up and comes to surface with reality.
· Someone Like You
Scarlett and Halley have been best friends for what seems like forever. Crushes, secrets, and clothes are just a few of the things they share. Scarlett was the popular, lurid one, while Halley stood there as her right-hand girl. Halley never minded this, though. But, at the start of their junior year, their roles quickly change. Tragedy strikes when Scarlett’s boyfriend gets killed in a motorcycle accident. Soon after this disaster, Scarlett learns that she is pregnant with his baby. Now, Scarlett really needs Halley. With these problems in Haley and Scarlett’s lives, will their friendship fall apart?

Hey...

Hey, I just wanted to let 'yall know that I'm still here. Has anyone heard of Julianne Johnson? She is doing a benefit concert with a music group I'm in, Panache.
Julliane (pictured at the right) is locally (Oregon & Washington) famous and she is a professional actress and singer. She came to the annual Panache "Lock-In" where we were locked in the music room. She is really outgoing, nice, and talented. She rehearsed a bit with us for the benefit concert. More later!!

Demi & Selena's Version

Miley's is funnier, but this is fun to watch too.

The Miley and Mandy Show!!!! Is my makeup to dark?

LOL. This is a Parody of Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez. Theirs will be up soon.

A Few Things About Me...

Hey! I've been blogging for a few weeks and it hit me that I haven't introduced myself! That's pretty much like knowing someone for a month and not knowing anything about them.

Here are some things you should know about wonderful me:

  1. I am known mainly at my school for my obsession of the Jonas Brothers. You should really check them out. YouTube.com/JonasBrothersMusic, MySpace.com/JonasBrothers, or Jonas Brothers.com. You pick...

  2. I have this weird problem with making sure the keyboard is perfectly level. It has to have right angles at all times. I have no idea how I got this problem. My room is a mess. My binder is ridiculous. Don't get me started on the family car. That's why I hate the school keyboards. There is something wrong with each and every one of them. Really! Either one of those little keyboard kickstands is missing, the spacebar is...uh, messed up, or keys are missing. I'm very OCD about that...

  3. I've always wanted to be a performer, but I have just recently come across a pretty large problem: my lack of talent. Sure, I got a lead role in Fiddler on the Roof, but that is a middle school production. But maybe I am just very self-critical...

  4. What snacks do I enjoy? I really enjoy things like Wheat Thins. Especially the Sun-Dried Tomato Wheat Thins. YUM... Well now I wish I had some...

  5. What concerts have I been to? I've been to a few. Hm.. I went to a country music fest or something like that. Carrie Underwood (my main reason for attending), Little Big Town were there, and I think Brooks & Dunn were there, too. That was all one concert! I also saw Raven-Symone at the Oregon State Fair. Then my family won this radio contest and won tickets to five concerts. I went to two of them. I got to see Martina McBride, with Little Big Town opening. We had 300 level seats (NOSEBLEED!) but won closer seats at a before-the-concert party. THEN, we met a woman who had an extra ticket and invited one of us to use it for free. My mom said that I should go since the seats were a once-in-a-lifetime oppertunity. They were FRONT ROW!!!(Martina pictured at the left, NO ZOOM!) After that, the second free concert was Tim McGraw & Faith Hill. We had like 200 level seats, which were pretty good. Then, just this Febuary, right before I had OJD (see acronym list to the right) I had enough money on my own to pay for tickets to see the Jonas Brothers. I bought them online and they said "Aisle 3" and they were $45! I was like, score! I went to the concert and guess what? Aisle 3 is the...um...flipping door that I walk into! I was in row FF, which is after row Z! So it was like X, Y, Z, AA, BB, CC, etc. But, Nick, Kevin, and Joe put on a great show, anyway. It was like the best night of my life...
  6. What are my addictions? Hmm...the Jonas Brothers, breath mints, MySpace (and I don't even have an account!), text messaging (haha, yeah...let's just say that 300 text messages last me...a week or two...and that's my monthly limit...), writing, and I have a feeling that soon I will have a blogging addiction...Gee, thanks Pam (Just Kidding)...

So that's all you need to know about lil' ol' me! If you have any questions, just ask! :)

THREE DAY WEEKEND!!!

Yes, you read it right!!!! PPS has just ended the 3rd quarter of school (UGH! What a LONG quarter that was!!) and tomorrow (Friday) the teachers have to work on grades and stuff. I''m only nervous about Science. It's the only class that i don't know what I'm getting. In all the other classes, I'm either getting A's or B's.

OMJ I am really glad I have OJD because if I never heard of the Jonas Brothers then I don't know how I'd live...Okay, I've stopped...

I got caught off guard yesterday. We did a simulation during rehearsal for the school Spring musical, Fiddler on the Roof. We were put into families that were torn apart by soilders. It was a very emotional time. Especially for the cast members that are Jewish. If you don't know what Fiddler on the Roof is about, you should come see our show! May 1, 2, and 3. Talk to me for details if you know me. If you don't know anyone at RGMS, then you probably don't want to come. After we finished, Lucy came up to me and we both agreed that without a second thought, we would die for eachother. Which is great to hear, but I never thought that ANYONE would EVER say that. I could tell Lulu was serious...

On a more pleasant note, Lucy and I have also agreed on these few things in the past 1 1/2 years of knowing eachother:

  1. I will be her "Man of Honor" at her wedding.

  2. She will be my "Woman of Honor" at my wedding.

  3. When Lucy and Haley W. turn 21 (I'll be 19), we are going on a road trip all over the country and we'll have tons of fun, hang out, and I'll be their "Designated Driver", since I won't be old enough to drink, anyway.

So yeah, we are pretty much best friends.

Lucy & I at my home

And Mandy is my other best friend. She is who introduced me to the Jonas Brothers. (I'm not going any farther about them, I promise!!! Well... in this post...) Mandy lives closer to me than Lucy, and I just met Mandy in December 2007. I've known of Lucy since September, 2006, but I've been BFF's with her since March 2007.

Part 1!!!

Part 1 of my Nick & Jordan Story...
·Jordan and Nick·
Part 1: Love at First Sight
It happened so quickly. The first time they met, it was only for a few brief seconds before Nick ran on stage to please his adoring fans. But those short moments were enough for Jordan to decide that they were meant to be together. Although, it’s pretty much impossible for celebrities to date and have a calm life. Miley and Nick were just friends and there were rumors going around in the dreaded tabloids saying that he got Miley pregnant. Jordan could not take that kind of blow to her career; at least not at this point. She was just about to reach the peak of her career. Nobody but her, her manager, and band knew that in as little as three months that she would be announcing her “Outside Looking In” tour. The tour was set to take place a few months after the announcement. But Jordan knew better than mostly anyone else that her life is more about living it to the fullest extent, not about playing it safe. Still, though, what’s a girl to do?
***
“Who was that girl?” Nick asked his eldest brother, Kevin, just moments before they were set to come on stage.
“That was Jordan. Don’t you remember her from her videos?” Kevin replied, as he checked his guitar for the thousandth time. The last thing that any of the three brothers wanted was to disappoint fans by stopping a show in the middle.
“Wait, Jordan Pruitt?” Nick asked, suddenly remembering a much different girl.
“Of course, why do you ask, anyway?”
“I just like to know who I’m meeting,” Nick responded. He was suddenly overwhelmed by a feeling he had felt once before. Back in New Jersey, Nick and his brothers’ hometown, they had a friend named Mandy. Kevin thought of her as his best friend, that was it. Nick and Joe, however, instantly fell in love with Mandy. Joe and Mandy eventually tried dating, which didn’t turn out well. Nick never got the courage to ask her out. This same feeling about Mandy is happening to Nick over Jordan…

Something Worth Sharing...

Nick has type 1 Diabetes and found out while on tour a couple of years ago. The Jonas Brothers did a concert at a Diabeates fundraiser and Nick asked the audience to raise their hands if they were diabetic. Nick surprised the audience as he raised his hand as well... this was his first public announcement about it. Here's the speech (Warning: May make you cry.)

Jordan Pruitt @ The White House

Hey!

I was on one of my FAVORITE musician's YouTube Page (Jordan Pruitt)
I saw this video and totally had 2 post about it...

Alex

and unlike many artists, you sound AMAZING without that big recording studio editing stuff...BEAUTIFUL DRESS, Jordy! Were you there the same day as the Jonas Brothers? Joe said that the Prez wants a certain type of shoes that Joe was wearing at the performance. JB(Jonas Brothers, for all you non-fans) also said that the prez leaned over and said "That's Just The Way We Roll" (Which is one of JB's songsj for the non-fans again)Great job, ur beautiful, and i'm soo proud!--Alex
